Philosophy Podcasts We Like

HOTEL BAR SESSIONS is just about to start it’s second season, and we know we’re late to the “philosophy podcasting” universe, so we thought we’d share a list of links to philosophy podcasts we like:

The Partially Examined LifeA deep-dive into philosophical texts by a group  of podcasters who once considered careers in professional philosophy, but subsequently thought better of it. This is a super smart, incredibly rigorous, more than a little inside-baseball-ish, philosophy podcast, The great thing about the co-hosts is that they have zero problems with disagreeing and do a fantastic job modeling how productive disagreements work in philosophy. 5 out of 5 stars!

The UnMUTE podcastAn interview-based podcast hosted by Myisha Cherry, focused on providing informal and accessible conversations about social, political, and ethical issues from a fresh, fun, and philosophical perspective. If you want to keep up with the cutting-edge of philosophy in the 21st C., this is your jam. 5 out of 5 stars!

What’s Left of Philosophy?Co-hosts Gil Morejón (@gdmorejon), Lillian Cicerchia (@lilcicerch), Owen Glyn-Williams (@oglynwil), and William Paris (@williammparis) discuss philosophy’s radical histories and contemporary political theory. This podcast’s audio can be a little hit-or-miss, but the content is always 5 out of 5 stars!

Philosophical Disquisitions: A podcast hosted by John Danaher (author of Automation and Utopia: Human Flourishing in a World without Work) that tends to focus on the ethics and politics of technology, but with a much broader reach. Five out of five stars if you’re interested in AI; four out of five stars if you’re not.

Overthink: Millennial-centric philosophy podcast that does a very good job of thinking through philosophy in a public-facing manner. Six out of five stars if you’re a millennual; three out of five stars if you’re GenX; zero out of five stars if your Boomer lol.

Black Mirror ReflectionsFull disclosure: this is one of our HBS cohost’s (@DrLeighMJohnson‘s) previous podcasts… but it’s also an awesome episode-by-episode analysis of the series Black Mirror that considers the philosophy, technology, ethics, and politics of the series with an expert guest interviewee for each podcast episode. Nine of out of five starts!

Very Bad WizardsA podcast featuring a philosopher (Tamler Sommers) and a psychologist (David Pizarro), who share a love for ethics, pop culture, and cognitive science, and who have a marked inability to distinguish sacred from profane. Each podcast includes discussions of moral philosophy, recent work on moral psychology and neuroscience, and the overlap between the two. This podcast requires some patience, but the pay-off is worth it. 4.8 out of five starts.

Hi-Phi Nation: Described as “a story- and sound-driven philosophy podcast, from Slate,” this podcast is sooooo much more interesting than that. Whatever is lacking in the hard-core philosophy here is MORE than made up for in the production value and public-facing nature of the philosophical work being done. Five out of five stars for content; 4 stars for what old-school professional philosopher would consider “philosophy.”

Philosophy for Our TimesThis podcast promotes itself as featuring “the world’s leading thinkers on today’s biggest ideas.” It is an obviously well-funded and professionally-produced podcast that delivers on that promise, and we’re not in the least bit salty about the fact that they can do what they do with the mountains of cash and talent their disposal. Still, begrudgingly, we have to admit to that this is solid, quality, podcasting content. Six out of five stars, with a one-star reduction because we believe in taxing the rich over here.
